The lighter side of the Left 4 Dead zompocalypse

A Sequel? Already?

I don’t know how many of you saw Microsoft’s E3 press conference, but one of the bits of news to emerge from it was a sequel for Left 4 Dead. Actually, there was a trailer, but you probably already saw that in the post below this one.

Luckily, that’s not all there is to know about Left 4 Dead 2, because IGN.com released a gameplay impressions article and a few videos concerning the game. Now I’m not here to try to give you all the news and tell you about all the new features… I’ll let the professionals do that. I’m just looking to share my thoughts a little with the Left 4 Dead community, and maybe see what you guys have to say.

While I’m certainly interested in this sequel having thoroughly enjoyed the first Left 4 Dead, part of me is a little confused/annoyed at this announcement. First, I have to wonder, why does all this new content need to be its own separate game? I was feeling like Valve was just starting to pump out the new downloadable content for Left 4 Dead, and some of the things being talked about (melee weapons, new campaigns, new zombies) would all be welcome, and seemingly possible, additions to the first game.

I noticed in the trailer a brighter, slightly more cartoony look to the character designs, and maybe that is the main reason L4D2’s new additions wouldn’t fit into L4D1… but I’m not convinced. At the very most this feels more like an expansion pack than a full sequel.

There are many Valve franchises to make sequels to, so why did the company choose to make one out of a game that’s not even a year old? And it’s not like this is coming out in the far-off future; the release date is November 17! I’m sure Left 4 Dead deserves a sequel, but I’m not sure it needs one so soon. Instead, I would rather be playing Half Life 2: Episode 3, or Portal 2… games that fans like myself have been waiting years for. I’m not saying that Valve isn’t working on either one of those, because chances are, they have more than one project going on right now. I’m just saying that I would rather have more developers focusing on either of those two games.

Finally, I can’t help but comment on the second to last paragraph of the IGN article I linked to earlier. For those too lazy to read it themselves, it says that the developers are considering putting all four of L4D1’s campaigns onto the L4D2 disk, to eliminate the hassle of switching disks for the people who want to play a campaign from the first game. In essence, this would render the first one useless, as there would be no reason to ever play L4D1 again if you could just do everything in the second game. The fans, of course, would buy the sequel, and the online playerbase of the first L4D would die off before too long due to everyone moving on to the next game. Thanks for screwing us over, Valve!

Also, there’s the Left 4 Dead: Game of the Year Edition that came out recently. (On a side note, who decided that L4D was the game of the year? I thought it was either Grand Theft Auto IV or Fallout 3…) Who’s going to want to buy that knowing that by the end of the year, you’ll be able to do everything on that disk in the sequel. Oh, I know who will buy it… people that don’t realize Left 4 Dead 2 will really just be Left 4 Dead 1+2. The people who buy the Game of the Year Edition would be screwed over more than anyone else, as they would only have a few months before their $50/$60 purchase became content that was merely thrown onto the sequel, as opposed to the people who bought L4D1 earlier, because those “lucky” people would have had more months than the others.

Luckily, this is all still just being considered. The IGN article even says “user feedback would probably help sway Valve, so make sure to let the company know what you think.” Well, what do you think? I’ve given my thoughts, so I’m interested to hear yours. There’s no doubt in my mind that Left 4 Dead 2 will be a great game, but I can’t help but question what Valve is thinking.

I’m pretty sure that playing left 4 dead 1 campaigns from left 4 dead 2 you can play with left 4 dead 1 players… otherwise they are idiots (and valve is not an idiot company)

  2.

According to everything I’ve been reading, while an expansion pack would work for the PC, it simply wouldn’t for the Xbox 360 (which makes up half of all copies of the game owned.

Therefore to keep both groups happy and playing with all this new content, it had to be a full on sequel. That it’s full price is a little unfortunate, but I for one am still looking forward to it.

The reason for including the original campaigns would also be to avoid splitting the online community, but your right it makes L4D seem like a waste of money.

The best Idea I’ve heard on this situation is make it so that the first game you buy is full price, the second one is 35 dollars, and you can then access content from either when looking for online matches. The price part is not vital, but the rest would ensure the community remains as a whole, though again the problem is if this translates well to the Xbox.

  3.

How would L4D2 be considered an expansion pack? It has *5* Campaigns opposed to L4D’s *4*.

Also, everyone at Valve decides on what they want to work on next, this time it turned out to be L4D2. Id much rather be playing HL2:EP3 too but im happy with this as well.

  4.

If I have understood Valve, they really don’t want to make a sequel, but they have no other choice. Everyone complains about how little new stuff there’s in L4D2, but if you really check it out, there’s A LOT of new stuff, and more that hasn’t been announced yet.

Most people probably have only seen the trailer and believes that that’s everything new. The trailer doesn’t show 20+ new weapons, 5 new campaigns, redesigned director, 3 new infected, weather effects, dynamic maps, new characters, new ammo type, more detailed story, all the new voice lines and the personality of the characters.. That wouldn’t fit on many 360’s hdds and it would take a long time to download. It’s just too much content for a DLC.

And Valve have said that they’re going to continue to support L4D1 with more content and user made campaigns, and possibly Valve made ones as well..

I don’t see how people can see it as Valve’s obligation to always continue to support every game, though. It’s great if they do it to the extent that they can, but if they just support old games, they can’t create new ones.

And those worried about the timeframe, it’s Valve Time we’re talking about:

Found the thread that suggested connecting the two. Link: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=888377

  6.

Looks like L4D: vice city to me, alltho unlike vice city it won’t feature that much new content. The game looks like a group of modders got busy and skinned the chars/guns and put a sun in the background…

    Thusfar not pleased

While welcome, I think the article is mostly just repeated most people’s concerns, though you definitely get kudos for actually managing to write it like an article and not like some ranting fanboy that thinks sounding angry is the same as sounding funny.

A good deal of my curiousity comes to the nitty gritty, specifically this no so-called Director and level designs. Maybe that had something to do with it? Requiring some great changes to the system that couldn’t be handled without some heavy updates to Source?

The elephant in the room you’ve described is the main issue though: What about the community? There are going to be people who, for various reasons, can’t ‘afford’ to buy L4D (and not just because they’re lolpoor. Perhaps there are other games they feel stronger about and put it on the backburner, perhaps there are legitimate concerns. Perhaps they’re genuinely happy with L4d but don’t feel like shelling out $50 for a handful of new campaigns and infected while retaining the exact same game. Either the majority of players are going to move to L4D2 (bad for those guys) or nobody is going to move over and I feel sorry for the suckers that buy it. This wouldn’t be an issue if L4D was older than a year. Honestly, am I going to buy L4D2 just to buy 3 later? Will L4D 1 be a ghost town?

While I have no strong opinions on the art style overall (I dunno if cartoony is the word I would use) I’ll say this: Switching to a daylight environment and leaving in old skins and artwork looks bad. During the gameplay footage, the Hunter, Smoker, and Boomer look painfully out of place, largely because they were clearly designed against a primarily black color palaette. Now against bright greens and browns, the matte gray/black makes them look like… well, models in a video game as opposed to part of the package. Something has GOT to change there, they look terrible.

  8.

Something I pointed out in another thread is the idea that they could have the two games be able to play with eachother, but only through the original 4 campaigns. Like Trackmania Nations Forever/United

  9.

Seeing as many people find the full-price sequel to be a poor decision on Valve’s part, one thing that they should think about is value for money.

I’m sure most people reading this blog have at least 40hrs of L4D under their belt. This is more than most full-price games offer these days. Naturally one could argue that this only applies to single-player games, but still… You have gotten your money’s worth out of L4D for sure.

Another thing that seems to annoy people is that they expected the same level of post-launch content support as has been provided with TF2. In other words, Valve set peoples’ expectations incredibly high with TF2 and an L4D sequel this quickly after the launch of the first game makes people feel Valve’s going to just forget about L4D. I don’t believe this to be the case, however. It IS Valve after all.

Regarding the “lack” of new content. I think many of us can name several franchises, that have a “new” game released every year for the full price with minuscule improvements aside from roster updates (I’m looking at you EA Sports! ;)). There was also the case of Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004, where Epic released UT2k4 about a year after 2k3 with a lot of the same maps, same weapons and same characters, but with the addition of vehicles plus the onslaught and invasion game modes. Didn’t hear many complaints back then :)

Sure the gameplay will be similar to L4D, but would you rather have Valve make it a zombie RTS? I mean, what more CAN you do in a zombie apocalypse setting? :)

  10.

That completely sums up exactly what I think about this.
    Awesome, but a rip.

Lets hope that there is some kind of discount for those of us who already have L4D 1. Would make the most sense I think

  11.

You have to know that the people making L4D aren,t valve, but Valve South, basically, Turtle Rock.

So they can’t release a sequel from another game.

And if the 4 campaigns from the first game gets included in the second, my guess is that you will need the first game to play those.

But at least thanks for not going like a big part of the fanbase and crying on the roofs that you deserve free shit from Valve.

  12.

I don’t understand what all the whining’s about.

L4D was my game of 2008 and I’m still playing it weekly. I’m really looking forward to a sequel and I’m so hyped that it’s coming so soon!

Valve would never be able to release the amount of content they’re promising for L4D 2 as an expansion pack - it wouldn’t be cost effective.

So they made a choice: put a small team on extra L4D content, then move the rest of the team on and make something else. Or focus the whole team on a kick-arse sequel. They’ve done the latter and I can’t wait to play it.

Anyway, for the amount of enjoyment you’ve got from L4D, you must feel you’ve got value for money? I know I have.

  13.

    @Jody

That would all be nice. If it were true.

There is information out there (I’m not going to dig it up again, look around if you want it) that Turtle Rock itself were the ones that pushed for a sequel. Gabe Newell was uneasy with the decision, but felt the need to support him because that’s what Valve does. The reason this is credible because there of promises made about new content for L4D and continued to support. Also, TF2 laughs in the face of being unable to produce a healthy amount of content.

Here’s the thing: I got value out of L4D. I consider my $50 paid in full. What I am substantially less convinced about is whether or not I will get my $50 value out of a sequel. Gameplay I see so far has not convinced me of that fact–me, who liked L4D so much I went and convinced my friends they had to come join me. It’s going to take a bit more than what I’ve heard so far to convince me. and the meantime, the community for L4D is going to be chopped up by aforementioned sequel, being partially or largely abandoned, ending the continued value of the game: Is a similar fate in store for L4D2?

We’ll wait and see I suppose, but I can be forgiven for being skeptical.

  14.

And just WHEN have any part of Valve EVER kept their promises on release dates?

    Never.

  15.

i agree with jiggles. think TF2. they announced it years before they actually released it.

    HOWEVER

as far as i know, valve always kept their promises when it comes to TF2 update release dates. ok, it might be 1 or 2 days off, but BIG DEAL. i’m not sure if there’s any delay in the release of L4D last year. knowing valve, i’m sure they gonna put even MORE contents than what we saw in E3. valve aren’t bunch of stupid people, they value user feedbacks SO MUCH that they actually kept on updating TF2 until this very second. let’s face it, we all whine about something we have yet to try.

and correct me if i’m wrong, i don’t remember valve ever mentioned that L4D2 will be sold in stores or on steam. they could just make it as a free expansion pack for the first one. why don’t we just sit down and relax?

  16. Sinister Minister

TF2 doesn’t count in the whole release date thing considering the original two people (at least, I think it was two people. I really don’t feel like digging it up at the moment, feel free to correct me) developing the TF series were already making TF2 before Valve even picked them up and ported the original.

  17.

As far as I can tell, Valve was going to use all the stuff they were thinking of to make updates for L4D, but they came up with so much stuff (characters, maps, weather, weapons, new director(s), new zombies, new gameplay styles, fixes to intrinsic problems with the game like corner camping, etc.) so quickly that they just thought “screw it, we’ll make a new game”.

Also. Valve bringing out a new game so quickly? Why is nobody cheering other than me?
This is a company that takes a long time to make great games. If they can make great games in a short time?
Well.. say goodbye to my life outside of the computer.

Also, xbox 360 revenue? This is a recession, you know.

  18.

hey, i love the new weapons as well, don’t get me wrong :D

    i think giving a random weather for L4D2 is really giving it a whole different experience really. L4D is good for survival horror, and that’s a given considering the great use of lighting and the dark enviroment. but i think Valve intends to give L4D2 the general zombie apocalypse survival experience, not just escaping in night time, but in daylights as well. kinda like 28 weeks later or those zombie movies. it’s pretty scary seeing hordes of zombies running towards you >_>;;;

i still don’t get why there are so many people complaining about this development…when they bitching around ’bout it, i say BRING IT ON!

  19.

I just started recently playing Left 4 Dead, but i consider myself already a huge fan of both, the gameplay as well as the characters (as undeveloped as they may seem) and the overall horror-movie-ish flair.
And that is, what i fear, will be lost in the new game. There will be new characters replacing the old ones with (seemingly) no further explanation, and personally, i dont exactly know how to feel about the new ones. They DO look rather cartoon-ish.
Also i worry about the atmosphere. I especially like the old horror-movie feeling with its grey flair and oppressive ambience. Now everything looks so brash, and i fear this whole horror feeling will somehow be lost. at least to me. Its a completely different thing to fight zombie hordes in the rainy night than in bright sunlight. For me it takes away the scary feeling. Also, as it was already mentioned before, all existing infected models will have to be redesigned and recolored, which will make them brighter and more colorful as well, and… when it comes to horrorgames, i am not exactly a fan of bright colors.
Sure, five new campaigns and melee weapons are additions i’d really like to see and use, as well as dynamic levels, new zombie types and so on. But i really worry about the whole flair that defines the series being lost between all the bright and gaudy new looks i have seen until now.

Also, my english may be not the best. ;)

  20.

Im not buying this.. What if in december they say that l4d6 is coming next june? (l4d6 comes from left 4 dead 1+2+3).. Im so mad to valve.. i bought this game for 52e from steam, after a couple weeks it was just 25e, this made me mad, but sequel allready? I prefer to play more tf2 and forgot this whole piece of shit

  21.

Valve is releasing Left 4 Dead 2 so that they can treat the xbox 360 community and the PC community equally. Just look at the difference between the console version of Team Fortress 2 and the PC version (one is pretty much abandoned) Plus, its very unlikely that Left 4 Dead 2 will release at full price of a regular game and will be much more worth the price than Left 4 Dead was.

HOW CAN NO ONE REALISE THIS.

  22.

My view on it is this. If you look at the new melee system, and how valve’s saying it’s going to change the game (Let’s face it, we don’t NEED melee weapons in L4D1, so they’ll likely make ammo more scarce in 2), along with the new director and other changes… this is going to be a completely different game. Yes, it’s still ‘go safehouse to safehouse, killing infected’, but everything inside that shell is going to be different. Just like, say, GTA VC vs. GTA4. Hypothetically, yes, they could’ve given better graphics and offered GTA 4 as an ‘expansion’ to VC, but… the vehicle controls and the feel of the game are so different that the original wouldn’t be the same game anymore with the new add-ins.

Same with L4D 1 and 2. I’d rather them come out with a sequel that changes the game so much and leave the original untouched, that way, if we hate what they’ve done with L4D2, or, if it’s just so darn DIFFERENT that we miss L4D1, we can always go back.

That being said, I do hope Valve offers a discount to those of us who own L4D1, or at least continue work on L4D1 in the form of another campagin or two. Valve’s already given us some good stuff (new Vs. campaigns, Survival mode + lighthouse), but I mostly play campaign, and would like one or two new things, even if only as a going away present.

  23.

(Whoops, forgot something). I also agree with the people who are a bit upset about us losing the current characters. I’ve grown rather fond of the current gang, with how diverse they are… A college student, an office manager, a biker, and a veteran? Who’d have thought of that? This new group seems too… similar, at least at first glance. You look at the old group and you wonder “How the crap did they come together?” This group looks a bit more… natrual, and I actually don’t think it’s a good thing.

I hope they keep the original cast in as an option. I’d like that, even if it was ‘non-canon’.

  24.

There is one thing valve might do to L4D2 to make it all right, in relation to the characters and our attachments to the first lot.

Whoever said that L4D2 may ship with with the content from 1 may be onto something there. Instead of having campaigns for the first lot and second lot seperate, why not have the ability to choose which group to use in ALL campaigns.

This way we could have the new guys running around Dead Air, and our old favorites finally getting some sunlight. I’m hoping this wish comes true.

  25.

“Just like, say, GTA VC vs. GTA4.”

Yeah, exept there was a six year gap between, they made a whole new game from empty table.. I bet this is just l4d(1) with improved code.. still the same game engine, graphics are basically just the same with more light (changes the whole look of the game) and less grain.. So they dont make better graphics or a whole new code for the game.. it looks pretty much the same and i bet it feels too.. I can buy this game if it is a mutch cheaper!

Im not intrested in new look either, becaus basically its just same shit in a different bag.. And adding frying pan and some flame bullets doesn’t make me to buy this game! I Sure try some “try before you buy” version before i put any money in this! And even if it is a new game, they should make it more intresting to play, l4d1 was fun for 2months, now it is just the same all the time :/

    sorry for my bad english!

  26.

The thing is that they don’t need a sequal but more of an expansion pack and I hope they get rid of the TF2 look in the new one and put back the dark gritty look that I loved from the first game. I just hope that the game turns out as amazing as the first one and keeps my appreciation to the dark yet humorous zombie apocaylpse to witch me have come to know and love. Please Valve, Do us right!

  27. Sinister Minister

…what TF2 look? It doesn’t look like TF2 at all.

  28.

    @ csharp.

Yes, I know of the gap and the improved graphics and the like, but I mean, if you look at the generalities of the game, you drive around, do missions, kill people, buy property, etc. in both. But only if you generalize really far can you say the game is the same. I’m hoping L4D 2 will be the same way. The same style of game, but different enough with the different paths, feel, and weapons that it feels like the difference between GTA VC vs. GTA4 rather than Madden 07 vs. Madden 08.

  29.

A few things that nobody has touched on yet, but seem important to me:

-L4D 1 was a full price game with less replayability (in my opinion) and thus less bang for buck, then tf2, but the game cost MORE! Not only that, I don’t think the original L4D is worth a full price tag.

-This ’sequel’ sounds like it will be priced the same, but so far doesn’t seem like it is going to have a whole lot more content for boosting play time.

-Apparently, production began on L4D 2 immediately after the first game was released.

  30.

    @Nessmk2

I Got your point and i must say i agree at some state, but if this cost more than 19,90€ then i think i dont buy this :/ GTA is just so different game, they add so much more to every thing, and the point that matters most; Its singleplayer (if we count GTA4 out).. But hey, this is just speculation about this game, hope that they make it that way that you feel like its more than first one with sunlight :) I think i have read that this will also have a demo, a real demo, not like L4D had, which i didn’t have time to play because i was in the army :)

  31.

    In response to Kanodin

Haven’t you heard of XBox Live Marketplace and the wonderful things they are doing? What are you talking about “Expansion wouldn’t work on the 360″. What about Fallout 3. Look at how many expansions there are for the 360, and look how many there are for the PC. Its the same damn number.

Also look at games like Fable 2, which is a 360 only game and has STILL released 2 expansions. Your argument makes no since. Valve COULD make it an expansion (Like the Survivor Pack) BUT they don’t want to. They want to make as much money as they can off this game. I’ve lost my faith in Valve over this (and the survivor pack, which ruined VS mode) so much so that I don’t play their games anymore, and I’m damn sure not going to buy anymore.
