The lighter side of the Left 4 Dead zompocalypse

Crowning Witch - Achievement, and Necessity

As a Left4Dead player, if I see a witch in the way I have a tendency to walk up and crown her. Much to the astonished cries of ‘How do you do that!’ Since starting left4dead I have heard lots of people freak out and panic over the witch; and even go to the extremes of creating entire plans to take her down. This panic can be almost as dangerous as the witch itself. And in VS this can be absolutely fatal to the entire team; a well placed Infected squad can and will kill you. What you need to be able to do is kill the witch with as little issue as possible.

Here is how you can clean her out as long as you are carrying a pump shotgun or better.

Understanding the Witch

There is 3 total angles that you will be approaching a witch from. Behind, the side and finally the front. But before we launch into how to ‘crown’ the witch, first you need to understand exactly what you are doing.

To ‘Crown’ the witch, you need to do more than 1000 damage in one shot. The shotgun at close range does 4x damage and can get in access of 1100 damage if all the pellets hit at point blank range on any difficulty.

Normal / Advanced / Expert all require the same 1000 damage or more in a single shot to crown the witch. The only real difficulty is on expert if you mess up; she will kill you in one hit. In VS you are instantly disabled which can get you and/or your entire team killed.

Another thing to come to terms with is that the witch will always go through her full animation. This animation consists of growling, standing up and then running / striking the person that woke her up. This gives you the time you will need to line up the one shot to get a killing blow. The trick here is to understand that you have this time to run in and line up the shot. Once she is startled however; anything hitting her like bullets or special infected will set her off after whoever startled her.

Now another thing that I need to clear up straight away. Crowning the witch does not in any way shape or form require a head shot. In fact shooting her in the head directly is very unlikely to achieve a crowning at all — as this guide will show you.

All screenshots with a GREEN circle are immediately followed up with successful Crowning shots. The screenshot in RED is a failed crown attempt.

Crowning from the Side

This is the easiest situation to crown a witch. Your shotgun needs to center in the middle of her body and you need to be point blank. I like to run up and touch her before centering my crosshair on her body as per the following screenshot. If the center of the shotgun crosshair is level with the center of her body it is likely you will achieve crowned.

Crowning Witch from Right Side ( Kill Shot Follows )

Crowning Witch from Right Side ( Kill Shot Follows )

Crowning from Behind

Crowning from behind is a little more difficult. And I would advise a slight sidestep to achieve a greater accuracy on the initial shot. If you don’t have time to adjust your angle (ie in vs) you will want to center your crosshair about mid way up her body to maximize the area in which your shotgun blast will hit. This screenshot offers the perfect area to crown. Again this screenshot was followed by a killing shot.

Crowning Witch from Behind ( Kill Shot Follows )

Crowning Witch from Behind ( Kill Shot Follows )

Crowning From Front (or why you should NEVER do it)

NEVER do this. You will almost never achieve a crowning shot when approaching a witch from the front. As per the following screenshot (this screenshot was followed in my decapitation ) doing direct damage to her head has little to no effect. In this situation if there is no possible way you can side step her side for a better shot ( very rare, occasionally in a train etc ) your best options are to have your companions line up while you stand behind them to shot at her. She won’t hurt anyone else as she is running; instead she will thump them roughly out of the way while covering her head and chasing down whoever startled her allowing your team to shoot her down before she reaches you. Be weary that sometimes once she is startled, if someone does an excessive amount of damage to her immediately afterwards she may switch targets to this person.

If you are lucky enough to have Automatic Weapons, this is much simpler. The above tactic works very well. Also anyone with a hunting rifle can shoot her in the head for a 2-3 second stun leaving her dazed. A good shooter can get a few shots on her head keeping her mostly immobilized.

If you have someone with an automatic shotgun, you can attempt lining up a shot as per the following screenshot. However do not stop firing the shotgun, and after the first shot begin backing up at full speed. Two shots at close range should be more than enough to kill the witch. However your safety is not guaranteed.

Crowning from Front Doesn't Work ( Witch Incaps on this Shot )

Crowning from Front ( Fails, Witch Kills Me )

These rules are not set in stone, these are simply guide lines to the easiest ways to get this achievement. It is not impossible to crown her with a shotgun to the face. It is also not impossible to wait for her to stand up and shoot her in the head to achieve the crowning shot.

This guide is to minimize the use of luck and maximize your ability to be able to line up a killing shot.

Now go out and kill some zombies.

Always wondered how you did that.

  2.

By the way, I’m pretty sure it’s not pronounced “crone” not “crown”. You know, like the synonym for witch, not the thing that goes on one’s head.

  3.

    [CR0WND]
Kill a Witch with a single headshot

The spellchecker just added an ‘e’ but you get the idea. At 2am its difficult enough to fight with it.

  4.

why didnt the last one kill? you still had her with about 95%+ thats bull!

  5.

God forbid Valve puts sensible hit boxes, especially when it seriously affects gameplay.

  6.

    @ClownX

It’s a pun- a cross between crowned (as it’s a headshot) and 0wned. I guess the crone thing fits in nicely as well, but the pronunciation doesn’t really matter…

  7.

    Sniper sez: Boom. Headshot.

    Demoman sez: -BOOOOOOOM!!

    Francis sez: I hate witches.

  8.

It’s also best to have you lowest health player attack the witch, as she’ll knock anybody down in one or two hits anyway. Best to save overall team health, and use that medpack on someone who needs it more anyway.

[...] mode has become a whole lot more important. Luckily, rogotin over at Boomercharged.net has written an excellent guide on how to ‘crown’ the Witch reliably. I highly recommend everyone read it before taking [...]

    Great article, really informative.

But really, why does everyone pick on the poor witch?

She’s obviously upset and just wants to be left alone, and yet here people are talking about how best to kill her and setting up pyres for her, in general a lot of nasty persecution.

Leave the poor thing alone, there are more fun things to shoot out there.

  11.

I thought you just needed to headshot her with the Hunting Rifle. Huh.

    Well, now I know.
And knowing is half the battle!

  12.

so hold on. What this is saying that the valve’s own achievement description is actually a bit misleading… is it really impossible to kill the witch with a single (actual) headshot?

  13.

I’ve got Crown’d, actually. Once. Need to practice. Turn on noclip and notarget, and kill bots! =D

  14.

@ohh: You can headshot the witch from behind as she gets up, but I tried this a bit with z_spawn witch and found that the method of going for the body is more reliable than the headshot. I also noticed this method is much more effective if you wait until the witch is standing up (but not running yet), so much so that her back nearly covers your screen, and you have about a second to shoot.

  15.

To practice your best option is setup a single player and :-

    sb_delete_all ( will remove all bots )
sb_blind 1 (this will stop the witch seeing you, it allows you to line up a shot)
    god 1 ( iddqd [joke] )
    z_spawn witch

This will allow you to practice spawning and lining up your shot. She will not ‘awaken’ as such even if you touch her with sb_blind 1 on. Make sure you do this on normal however because on adv / expert her hit boxes get MUCH smaller and it is far more difficult.

In expert the largest area for her hitbox is actually at the base of her neck, on the lower part of her head (as is scribbled on one of the walls ) and in expert this is actually the prime spot to hit her. As the back / side is a lot more difficult. But I was thinking of writing an expert article later — I wanted to get VS out of the way first.

And yes some people feel comfortable with shooting her when she stands up, the unfortunate thing about this is during vs the downtime means if a hunter pounces her or a boomer goes off near her it will set her off.

  16.

Informative article. I usually crown most witches I see unless we’re on Expert just for the practice. I’d say that 80% of the time I get it and another 15% I need a second shot to take her down. The remaining 5%? Well we all make mistakes…

  17.

or you can just startle her and blow her away with the autoshot gun as she runs at you…

  18.

I’ve been playing Versus religiously since the game came out, and never once had a problem killing the witch with legitimate headshots. You need to wait until she’s fully standing up, and be as close as possible.

However, I’m definitely gonna try this method out. If it means I can wait a little less time or be safer, it’s totally worth doing

  19.

Best thing I’ve ever had. =D

Unless, of course, my teammates startle her while I’m still walking up.

  20.

This article is a bit misleading. The witch, though she only has 1k health, will take 200%/100%/75%/50%/100% damage on easy/medium/hard/expert/versus respectively. On all difficulties other then hard and expert, you can get away with just the body shot, and on hard you can still do the body shot with an autoshotgun since its stronger, but otherwise you will need at least some bullets to hit the witches head on expert or with a pump shotgun on hard.

  21.

Again, that is completely incorrect in saying that it requires head shots. And valve have done a good job explaining exactly how to cap a witch via writing on the wall.

‘Headshot’ is very miss leading. The correct method to shoot a witch on expert is at the base of her neck. Your best bet is to actually approach her from the front and aim directly downwards before she stands shooting her in the back of the neck. As per the ‘writing on the wall’ so to speak which advises it after many crossed out comments.

Also, the reason it works when she stands up is not due to a headshot. It is due to the higher damage she takes when you shoot the lower portion of her head. The bullets hit her upper neck where is the ’sweet spot’.

Letting her stand up is possibly the worst thing you can do. The moment she is startled, an infected ( any kind ) can set her off on her target. You wait, a hunter pounces the witch and it WILL set her off. Regardless of if you fire or not. Much the same as a boomer or smoker hit.

This does NOT work if she is not startled or aware of anyone around her. Infected can not move her any longer. Once she is startled anything can set her off.

Feel free to attempt to shoot only her head on expert using the commands I listed above. You will find that if you crouch down at her side and make sure you only shoot her head without the crosshair passing through the base of her neck. You will never get crownd.

This guide was more for the Versus aspect however, where it is %100 valid. Perhaps I should have clarified. But the more complex you make it the fewer people keep interest.

  22.

I’m pretty sure that CR0WN’D is a cross between Crone (as in the witch) and Owned (as in dominated.)
That makes the word still sound like crone, while having the word own in it as well. Cr(own). Just my opinion.

  23.

I love you, man. Witch is cakewalk now, especially since they made the Versus spawn areas so much more predictable. =D

On a side note, now I have to figure out how to get people to stop freaking out and shoot at her before I even get close. >=O

  24.

I’m actually fairly sure crown’d is a combo of a crown you wear on your head and perhaps owned. Hence, shooting the witch in the head. I could be wrong and the crone ideas could be right.

  25.

I found this guide a long time ago and just came back to say thanks!
after reading this i have near perfect crowning attempts even with the pump-shotgun. It always manages to surprise people in versus!

  26.

The fact that the “O” is capitalized in the achievement, making the name rhyme with “owned”, makes it a Crone(as in witch)/Owned pun.

  27.

[...] There’s not much to be done about this. Unless the witch gets a serious buff from Valve in a future update, she’s not ever going to cause a problem for players who have spent enough time running up and down the zombie-infested wasteland to know which end of their gun is the dangerous end, and where to stick it for maximum effect. [...]

  28.

Thanks :) the trick was in walking up to her and actually bumping into her, then shooting.

  29.

After reading through the article, I just feel that I really need more info. Could you suggest some more resources ?

  30.

I agree its dumb this works at all. The Hunting Rifle stun is cool. But being able to 2 shot her with this method is really quite lame. First week playing this before people knew how to do this the Witch was always a scary an intense part of any game trying to either sneak past or setting up an hoping you could gun her down before you reached you.

I’ve done it in versus — over and over again — this method works every time, yet people still ask me “OMFG HOWD YOU DO THAT?!”
