The lighter side of the Left 4 Dead zompocalypse

On the matter of unfriendly fire

Let’s start by stating a very obvious fact – Friendly fire kills. It can decimate teams who were previously mowing through the horde in seconds, and see tensions rise in your fellow players at an alarming rate. In short - It’s bad. Still, I’m here to try and make it good, by pointing out idiotic maneuvers and stopping bullets from penetrating your soft flesh. Yes, friendly fire will probably still happen after you read this, and the “Safety first” achievement will still remain floating in the void of impossibility, but at least people won’t be hunting down their attackers with murderous intent anymore…

Stop taking the Shotgun. Really.

To put it bluntly, zombie films lied to you – The shotgun isn’t the ultimate weapon when it comes to wiping out the horde. Sure, it’s nice to mow them down with blast after blast, but every weapon can do that, and even do in the close ranges the shotgun is meant to excel at. The crucial factor here, however, it that one errant twitch of the trigger with a different weapon isn’t going to down the one person who’s healthy in the blink of an eye. It’s certainly possible for every weapon to kill you, but at least they don’t have much spread, meaning you can actually kill a zombie pounding on someone without blasting the legs off both parties.

Look, I understand it’s useful. I understand you should have at least one of them on your team. But can we scale it back a little? Perhaps show a little more thought in your choice of weapon, instead of just going for the one where your inevitable mistake will cost everyone dearly? You’ll be surprised what a little thinking can do!

Watch where you stand

Those four words seem to have an aurora of obviousness about them, but it’s surprising how many people simply don’t know this. Listen up, you bumbling fools; Do not walk out in front of someone who’s scoping out the corridor ahead, as they will want to kill zombies and not you. Stop running round like mad the second things get a bit crazy, because that makes you very hard to miss. Oh, and stop trying to hog the glory of a kill by running into the warzone and then bitch about it when you inevitably fall down. Ok?

In fact, trying to get in front of someone or edging closer to the scope of fire is an unwise move practically all the time. Sure, you might not be killing as many zombies as you wish, but you could still do such practical things such as watching the rear. Keep team movement as logical and natural as possible – Don’t just stick your gurning face in the middle of someone’s screen whenever the time feels right to do so.

Fire or fisticuffs – the eternal question

Sure, it’s true that people normally enter a game of Left 4 Dead with the best intentions in mind. They want to help by blasting those zombies threatening your life and generally trying to save the day. The thing is, they may inadvertently be causing more harm than good… They may mow down the zombie beating down on you, but if the path of bullets then continues into you due to the lack of good reactions or pure bad luck, the whole protection was for nothing. Basically, you should only be firing if you have a clear shot, and if there’s even a minuscule chance of there being collateral damage, you should move in for the family friendly melee attack. Observe…

Naturally, that’s only a general rule. If the situation needs bullets, use bullets. If the situation needs you to cover the door of a closet using an endless flow of melee attacks, use melee attacks. The key point to remember here, however, is to remember the trigger finger is not the answer to every problem that arises.

Have a computer player?

This is just a thought, but it’s an interesting one… The AI may wander round aimlessly, waste health and die quite a lot – But it will never shoot you. Instead, it will do stupidly skillful things such as shooting through tiny gaps and stopping that single zombie without even laying a scratch on you. So, if you’ve got someone who’s incessantly shooting you to death, perhaps the only viable option is to vote them out and replaced by the computer. Maybe blasting through an easy campaign with all the other players being AI could net you a certain achievement that has been mentioned above… *Hint*

In the end, it was an interesting decision to put friendly fire in Left 4 Dead, but it makes the game infinitely more strategical, annoying and downright insane as a result. Take these tips on board, and maybe the only annoyances that will be created won’t be ones done by your own hand…

Or simply aim at the zombie knees, the gibbing is nearly as funny and your bullets don’t end up hitting friendlies.

When choosing at the beginning between the Uzi and the Pump, the obvious choice is the Pump, the Uzi just runs out of ammo way too fast.
When choosing at Tier 2 the Autoshotty is the obvious choice because of its high damage output.
The most dangerous thing to a team is the Tank, no question, more teams lose to the Tank then any other game situation. A team full of Autoshottys is really the only way to go.

And to tell you the truth, the spread on both of them is really quite small. Its very easy to shoot zombies off teammates without hitting them once you know the boundaries of the spread.

Until VALVe makes the shotguns spread enough to matter there is no reason to choose any other weapon.
Go watch a league match, the other weapons are never used.

I love paint. And according to your diagram… YOU DO TOO!

@Stuart Faillington II, that’s exactly what I do.

Good article, except telling people to not take the shotgun is possibly the WORST idea … ever.

Reasons why you SHOULD take the shotgun –

Two weapons in the game most affect the witch. The hunting rifle for a 2-3 second stun. And the shotgun doing the most damage and the only gun capable of a single shot kill.

Why this is relevant? When you have 4 people without shotguns on expert, the witch WILL kill one. Your only hope is for one of your team mates to have a shot gun and attempt a cap. Especially when you can’t avoid her.

Tank busting with 4x auto shotgun is by far the best way to take down a tank. A potentially dangerous threat to your team can be wiped out very quickly with 4x close combat with a tank. Although I don’t always recommend this. It is MOST useful when the shotgun is not. In close combat quarters / corridors like No Mercy when the tank barrels down a hallway.

The shotgun should ALWAYS be carried by at least one team member, its other great advantage is in those moments when you find a horde coming from a single doorway. A single shotgun auto fire with rapid blasts can wipe out the entire horde in seconds. This not only saves on pipe bombs, but on ammo for your companions who only need to lay down cover fire.

All and all if you have issues with cover fire from the shotgun a few simple recommendations like, if you are going to round a corner first, hug the inside of the corner while crouching, or press your back to the wall on the outside of the corner while standing, so your team mates can crouch under your fire will make all the difference.

All and all, the shotgun is easily the most versatile weapon of the three, and the only weapon that must be carried by at least one person at all times.

If not because its the fastest way to remove a witch when you need to make a run for it.

I stopped reading at “Stop taking the Shotgun.”

    mmmm,
I thikn 1 shotgun at least is useful but:
Molotov are by far the best way to kill Tanks in expert. no single bullet is required in most cases. Just Molotov and run.

you do not need to kill 99% of witches. So no need to be prepared to kill them.

The main argument for me is the: stay calm and dont move. Zombies do not shoot at you, therefore you do not need to move and bunny jump. This usually end in you entering into some friend line of fire.

Know where your mates are, and if u have to move in the middle of the action (only due to zombies reaching to you or to save another mate from huntes/smoker) do not cross lines of fire and try to move in a predictable way. Remeber that there is no sniper pointing at you from the other team, you have to forget all those zig-zag maneuvers you use in any other FPS

“…there is no sniper pointing at you from the other team…forget all those zig-zag maneuvers you use in any other FPS”

So very true! I found myself doing it last night (I was still in TF2 scout mode) and caught an auto shotty to the back of the head for my stupidity.

I’m sorry, I still think a whole team of CASUAL PLAYERS who don’t fully understand the game - All wielding shotguns - Is asking for it.

As I sort of said in the article, it’s all well and good knowing the shotgun can do these things, but it’s a completely different thing when it comes to actually doing it.

  9.

I think all weapons are needed in a game of L4D, just like all classes are in TF2. Shotgun is needed, but not by EVERYONE. The machine gun is needed, but not for everone. And god help you if everyone picks the hunting rifle. :D (Note to all rifle-lovers. I’m not dissing it, I’m just saying that you need variety).
I don’t think any weapon is a ‘natural choice’, unless you only know how to use one effectively, or the other three members of your team already all chose the shottie.

And, I hardly think that league play is a fantastic argument for this site. THis is for people who play the game for fun rather than competiton. Yes, the shottie might be best in a league match where everyone’s used to each other and plays enough to know all the tricks of the trade with the shotgun, but with other, less experienced players (And/or random teammates) a variety tends to be best in order to meet everyone’s wants, as well as what they excel at.

  10.

Two Uzis and Two Shotguns work great for me!
And I actually prefer the Uzi to the Pump. I just don’t like the way the Pump handles.

  11.

I love the shotgun since I’m bad at aiming. I’ve used it to the point where I’ve memorized the spread, and I cause less friendly fire incidents with it than any other weapon (on expert, three times per campaign?). With practice it is much less dangerous than claimed. As a previous poster mentioned, if zombies are between you and someone else then go for the knee caps. If they’re attacking someone on the ground, duck and shoot above them. The shotgun is also better for holding lines because you can just load a shell when possible instead of taking the time to load a clip.

@ Stuart Wellington III (2nd post)
There is always a ammo spot or two in every section of every map if you look. Also if you use the uzi in bursts it lasts plenty long. I use the hunting rifle almost every time partly because no one else will. and because of it I do the least team damage most of the time. as for taking down a tank quickly (with out a molotov) 4X uzi will make the tank move so slow he will never reach you (if you time your reloads right) vs the shotgun where to do any real damage to the tank you have to be with in arms reach and on expert that’s an incap. So please use the shot gun… just don’t ONLY use the shotgun.

Clarification: Bots are capable of friendly fire. However, their shots cannot damage Survivors, only knock their camera as all friendly fire does. As per the bullet penetration rules, they can even shoot zombies through you, killing zombies and not damaging you.

As for weapon choices, I run on a map per map basis, and based on other teammates choices. Uzis are better at saving people (uzis can headshot hunters off of pounced survivors) especially in larger maps, which I consider the most important feature (especially in fast-paced Versus). The assault rifle is basically a giant Uzi, so I seect it for the same reason. Also, both are great at wiping out head-level hordes at any range (although the autoshotgun is equally effective). The flaw of both mag-of-50 weapons is the reload - although the AR reloads in 1.8 seconds, making this slightly less of a concern - so shotguns are important for controlling horde events. (If you run out of ammo, you’re either not looking or not running enough.) Shotguns are more effective against Tanks and Witches (the autoshotgun especially). The lack of power at range, especially with the pump shotgun, is fine as long as you are prepared to enter akimbo assassin mode occasionally. Friendly fire with the shotgun is an issue, but only depending on the quality of your team - don’t play Expert with randomers, basically.

I think the ideal Tier 1 team is two uzis and two shotguns, the ideal Tier 2 team on an encolsed map (e.g. No Mercy 4) is three autoshotguns and one assault rifle, and the ideal Tier 2 team on a larger map is two autoshotguns, one assault rifle and one hunting rifle (the sniper is interchangeable for another rifleman, but on maps like Blood Harvest 3 the hunting rifle has amazing potential applications, plus better ammo conservation if the going gets tough). (The ideal finale team is always, without exception, four autoshotguns, due to close encounter range, 100% tank probability and less time to reload. The minigun can do anything else.)

  14.

I wouldn’t say zombie movies have been lying to anyone when it comes to shotguns. The reason you think it’s not nearly as effective in Left 4 Dead as it appears to be in zombie flicks is because those zombies move much slower than the Infected in this game.

  15.

Nearly everyone here has commented without reading the article, apparently. Yes, the shotgun is useful. No, that doesn’t mean you should flame an article just because it appears to be about how the shotgun is useless. And I quote:
“Look, I understand it’s useful. I understand you should have at least one of them on your team. But can we scale it back a little? Perhaps show a little more thought in your choice of weapon, instead of just going for the one where your inevitable mistake will cost everyone dearly? You’ll be surprised what a little thinking can do!”

  16.

FYI, the AI does not pull ‘amazing skillful shot’. FF is turned off for computer players. We’ve observed them shooting through one another, and in one particular case, shooting through my torso.

  17.

I think perhaps the article needs some clarification then. Because a shotgun on Normal (I can assume only that ‘casual’ players would play normal, maybe advanced) the shotgun does almost nothing in the way of damage from friendly fire. In fact, in VS if you use a team of auto shotties you can spam through your team mates to kill hordes of infected quite happily without causing lasting damage.

Advanced you would need to watch your fire a little more .. but if you are in advanced and spamming full force with a shotgun at distance with team mates near by you really need to perhaps rethink your positioning. If you go spamming the carbine 20 feet from your survivor friends and they are all standing you are just as likely to hit with friendly fire. Advanced assumes you’ve acquired the basics of the game, and know better than to ty and clear out horde from a distance with a shotgun and have the quick thinking to switch to your pistol(s) if there is a friendly fire threat.

More so, if you are in EXPERT where the shotgun really does count. All players should more than be capable of controlling there friendly fire. Even with a team of 3-4 shotguns you should have no issues. Expert relies on the 4 of you sticking together, corner melee with your companions when a horde comes, melee hunters off and have the quick wits to switch to pistols if you need to take down a distanced smoker instead of needlessly spamming the shotgun.

All in all, though frustrating. It sounds not so much a problem with the weapon, but the people wielding it. And if that is the case, then perhaps it should be more a case of ‘don’t come to advanced if you don’t know where you are shooting’.

  18.

And, now, this article will be even more helpful since Valve decreased the damage the autoshotgun does (only to tanks? Not sure).
