The lighter side of the Left 4 Dead zompocalypse

Zero Punctuation Does Left 4 Dead

Yahtzee has popped out a review of L4D in his usual style. He’s not too hard on it. Seems the only games he likes come from Valve.

I’d embed it, but the embed code that the Escapist’s video gives me doesn’t want to work when I paste it.

Anyway, you can go watch the video at The Escapist.

Once you realize that Yahtzee is highly susceptible to the Hype Effect, his opinions make a lot more sense.

  2.

is it just me or is yahzee getting soft?

  3.

I think Valve is one of the few developers that Yahtzee actually has some semblance of respect for. I don’t agree with many of the things he’s stated, but I enjoy his reviews and his opinion.

  4.

Love Yahtzee. He usually sums up my feelings towards a game.
And he does love Valve. I believe they even flew him to their offices once and gave him a tour etc.

  5.

This is true, and I think he gave an overall positive review for The Orange Box. He liked Team Fortress 2.

  6.

    @Llamafarmer - yeah, they did.

I’ve been loving Valve for years. They never flew me over for a VIP junket tour :(

(ALTHOUGH I’M OPEN TO THAT IF YOU’RE LISTENING GABE)

    COUGHPRINCEOFPERSIATRILOGYCOUGHPAINKILLERCOUGHPSYCHONAUTSCOUGH

But yeah he only likes Valve games. Totally.

  8.

Anyone who doesn’t like Psychonauts deserves to be shot. |:<

Psychonauts rocked. One of the best games I’ve ever played.

Except for the end boss(es) battle. GOD DAMN that just went on and on and on, and it was BITCH hard.

And there were barely any save points while you were in there, so you’d have to go over and over and over it.

  10.

Not to mention the fact that Portal was one of his all-time favorite games…

  11.

    Oh, and Richard:
No. It is just you getting soft :P

  12.

I started to dislike yatzee’s reviews at one point then I realized if you listened to the actual points rather than the overall mood than they were quite reasonable. Now they’re strangely similar to my own opinions…

Yahtzee’s reviews have always been entertaining to me, even though I never take them seriously.

Also, I like his suggestion of playing as one of the little horde infected while you wait to respawn. It would be fun, it would give the players something to do between pounces, and it wouldn’t break game balance THAT much, since there really isn’t all that much you can do as a weak infected besides blindly attack the survivors and stand around idly.

Yahtzee and Valve have a one sided (if you exclude the company tour) history. He says quote

“…the only people I let wank off in my face is Valve…”

End quote. Yahtzee also does a lot of Half Life references like the Dr. Freeman toon he has in his intros, a Gordon Frohman-Niko Bellic pun, and some more Valve thingies.

    Freakin’ love the man.

    CoD4, Saints Row 2, Fallout 3, Assassin’s Creed.

I’m also quite in agreement with his statement “Doesn’t hold the infinite replayability of Team Fortress 2.” I like L4D, but it doesn’t quite match up to TF2 for me, even after 240 hours of the latter. O_o

  16.

I hated that damn meat circus part…

  17.

As well as being a highlight of my Wednesday evening, I also find myself agreeing with almost everything he says. Sure, he heaps on the bile, because an acerbic review is funnier than a gushing one, but his points are valid.

    @VAKinc

If you mean to say Yahtzee rates hyped games more highly, then I point you to his reviews of Halo 3, Fable II, and many others.

  18.

@Shrake12: “…personally, I reserve the privilege of wanking off in my face for only my closest friends and Valve employees.” It’s not a quote unless you use the exact words, you paraphraser.

  19.

    SirMax just owned Shrake12.

    SAC, that’s 500+ hours of TF2 for me. :)

  20.

Lawl noobie51, you know Don Newman (http://www.ubercharged.net/2008/09/26/don-newman/)? +400 hours of pyro ALONE. Of course, his next is medic at just under 100 hours, but still. Totals 700 something.

SirMax FTW. Paraphrasing fails, especially on the Internet where people usually don’t bother to check.

    @Zorgulon:
Exactly, mate. Them ol’ wankers ain’t taking it too lightly. He says what he thinks of the game, regardless of anything about it. See Mirror’s Edge. He usually advocates originality (which he refers to in the video anyway), but he tells you the game is shit nonetheless, original or not.

  21.

SAC, I know of Newman - that’s some impressive playtime; but if I had more time to play TF2 I would.

Love Yahtzee’s games. I still have Seven Days A Stranger icon on my desktop.

Never really read anything of his, but I guess it would be the time.
