The lighter side of the Left 4 Dead zompocalypse

You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me

Left 4 Dead isn’t even out yet and people are already going for Valve’s throat. Valve has updated the demo 4 times already and people are still complaining. How many other companies do you know of that would patch a demo? Valve provides excellent support (for a demo, no less) and people decide that the best way to repay them would be to kick them in the teeth (figuratively of course, we all know that Gabe Newell is a martial arts master). 99.9% of all the problems that I have seen so far lie in the hardware of the user, not Valve’s code.

Now while I do understand that buying a new computer is a big deal, it’s really not Valve’s responsibility to make sure that their games can run on your computer. I know I’ve said this before, but Valve has absolutely no responsibility to provide support for their games. They have no obligation to cater to your every whim. A lesser group of people would have given up by now, given they way some people treat them, but they continue to trudge forward and update their games. And yet people feel the need to act indignant, as if Valve owes them something.

Normally I would say that the ungratefullness that the community has demostrated was shocking, but having used the internet more than once, nothing shocks me. Once again, how many companies would take the time to update a demo? I challenge anyone to show me a developer who has ever shown that kind of dedication. Valve shows the community time after time that they do care, and people spit in their face.

Now, an argument could be made that the demo is a smaller copy of the actual game and that Valve are working the bugs out. And if so, then why the hell are people complaining? On the Steam Forums (and you know the intellectuals all flock there), I counted at least 5 threads saying that Valve’s updates “broke the game” and that Valve “had no right to remove console commands”. As for the first, if the updates “broke the game” why was I still able to play it? Oh wait, because I’m not using the same 8 year old system you are you stubborn bastard. As for the latter comment, it’s Valve’s game. They can do whatever the damn well please, I might add. If they wanted to, they could remove multiplayer. They don’t even have to release it if they don’t want.

So I want all the whiners to think about this next time they’re about to post some generic “I HATE VALVE” thread: Does Valve really have to do anything for you?

Jeez, I could not agree with you more. I need to buy you a cold one.

  2.

yeah I was pretty impressed at the demo updates. Fixing bugs other than those ones where people got supposed to be locked content was pretty nice of them.

You’re entirely right; the ingratitude is entirely ridiculous, childish, and uncalled for. But I think (and I hope the Valve people have figured out) that it’s the result of 1) young people with no sense of perspective and 2) fanatical devotion that borders on obsession (see 1). The people who complain about every little detail about something, after all, are the people who are *thinking* about every little detail about that thing.

Most games come on the market, sell (or don’t) for a few weeks, and then fade quietly away, with no complaining — and no obsessive, neurotic, whiny fans. I suspect that anyone who makes a truly great video game is doomed to be hounded by a cadre of loyal complainers forever. Most game-makers would kill to have those legions of ungrateful fans.

None of which excuses that sort of rudeness, mind you.

they couldn’t remove multiplayer if they wanted.

It’s an advertised feature and we would all be entitled to a full refund.

    I’m just being picky.

I agree with you on all of this. Also, congratulations for getting the 2nd rant on Boomercharged!

I think the Steam Forums are really just for people who hate the game. Everyone who doesn’t doesn’t post, because there’s no problems. I think Valve gets that and that’s why they aren’t bothered by the forums.

This is one thing I’ve learnt from artists; you have to ignore 80-90% of the feedback that people give, and up to 99% on teh internetz, because most of it is whiney bullshit or spam or defamation attempts. I say, let the artists decide what’s good. Have you ever create a title with the quality of Half-Life? No? Have you ever even SEEN videogame code, or tried creating on?

I am so tired of people of teh internetz complaining about the actual way the game is played and then going like a few comments later and seeing the actual people who care and know what it’s like. I mean people have been comparing CoD 5 to L4D. WTF IS UP WITH THAT?! the only reason why you could do that is because they both have zombies in somewhere. Man why do these people say they love steam and love valve games and they say this bs about them?

I dislike people ranting about valve, too. But on the other side, they paid 50$ for a game which was altered in a way that some didn’t want _after_ they bought it, which seems kind of unfair to me. Of course, they are going to implement new weapons, new maps, or even new zombies while they just removed the fps_max command - but still, that’s a wee bit unfair. I liked fps_max.

I’m glad they removed console commands but i wish they would do the same for TF2 because I am tired of cross-platform matches where people are using them to cheat or otherwise degrade the game.

  11.

    platform crossovers?

  12.

    Lol, L4D2 boycott.

great view i think the same
