The lighter side of the Left 4 Dead zompocalypse

Weapon efficiency and you.

Now, most of us have played the demo (shame on those who haven’t). And we know what niche the weapons fall into. This is a much more in-depth guide I have concocted from my experience with the demo.

Sidearms

This tier is reserved for sidearms, of which, there are only pistols so far.

Pistol(s):

Advantages: High rate of fire (Like machine guns if you click fast enough), Long range, Infinite ammo

Disadvantages: Low stopping power

These are your emergency weapons, and your poor-man’s sniper. Use them at a range to take out unaware infected with impunity, and at close range to haul your ass out of the fire when your primary weapon is out of ammo. Stopping power is a definite issue, but with infinite ammo, it makes up with quantity over quality.

Tier 1

These are your base primary weapons, and your bread and butter. Use them well, my fellow survivors.

Pump Shotgun:

Bill and Francis with their shotguns.

Pump shotgun:

Advantages: High damage at close range. Medium ammo count.

Disadvantages: Low range.

The shotgun is all about getting up close and leaving nothing but pieces.  Use this only at close range. At long range, you have about as much chance of killing the horde as McCain winning the election. Jack. Squat. Now you can attempt a long range shot in emergencies, but it will only slow the enemy down, not kill.

Zoey. Uzi. What else do you need to know?

Uzi:

Advantages: High rate of fire, great range, High accuracy

Disadvantages: Low damage, Low “spread”

The Uzi is a weapon you hang back with. Stay behind your shotgun wielding companions and take out some of the horde, before they get to you and your compadres. At close range, the weapons efficiency is severely limited, and you’ll have a higher chance of being knocked into last stand. This is simply because the gun is TOO accurate, it doesn’t have enough spread to efficiently hit more than anything directly in front of it. Use this if you prefer hanging back from combat.

Tier 2

These are your ambrosia and nectar. They, simply put, p00n face with a ferocity like no other primary weapon.

Bill with his M16, with a ridiculously huge muzzle flash.

M16:

Advantages: Good range, good stopping power

Disadvantages: low “spread”

This weapon is a good mid-range weapon. It has enough accuracy to pull head shots from a distance, and remove large numbers of infected as they charge you. At close range however, unless you get all head shots, many of the problems that affect the Uzi also apply here. Its spread is small, so you have to aim directly at an enemy to kill it, and a body shot does some damage, but when facing a horde at close range, body shots that don’t kill instantly don’t cut it.

Louis is leading with the Automatic Shotgun.

Automatic Shotgun:

Advantages: Higher rate of fire, slightly longer range, slightly higher damage

Disadvantages: Range is still low

This is a stronger, better, faster shotgun. Its rate of fire is greatly increased, it does some more damage, and has slightly longer range. Use in close quarters for best effect.

The original Zoey and the Hunting Rifle.

Hunting rifle:

Advantages: Insanely accurate, very high damge, increased bullet penetration, long range

Disadvantages: Completely ineffective at close quarters

This is your sniper, simply put. It kills, most of the time, with one shot, and is the most accurate gun in the game. Rate of fire is low, but a sniper doesn’t necessarily need a high rate of fire. Use at long range if able. At close range, this weapon becomes cumbersome, because you have to aim for each individual enemy. A little known advantage is extremely high bullet penetration, the bullets can pierce almost anything.

Special Weapons

These are weapons you find on occasion that don’t fall into a specific category.

Francis and the Molotov.

Molotov: A great horde control weapon. Throw it ahead or behind you to stop zombies in their tracks. Also works well against the Tank to do a constant stream of damage. DO NOT use at close range. That is just committing suicide.

Pipe Bomb: Great at taking out an initial rush, but no lasting effects. Throw it anytime during a horde attack to relive some of the pressure off of your team. Ineffective against boss infected.

Mini gun: This is the weapon you find during finales. Spray and pray is the name of the game here. Just avoid hitting teammates, and watch your back.

Hopefully this guide is helpful for when you are choosing your weapons.

You forgot medpack… It may look harmless but run through easy using only melee is very dangerous indeed. Though we had to resort to bullets for the tank.

  2.

Yeah, I would have to disagree with the hunting rifle being “completely ineffective” at close range.

  3.

I think you should have mentioned the reload abilities of each of the weapons during melee attacks.

You see, when you’re reloading, you can melee attack and the reloading “timer” continues to tick. So let’s say that you’re being swarmed by the Horde and you have to reload you’re uzi. Simply start the reload and mash right-click like no tomorrow. You will continue to reload while you push zombies away.

However, this isn’t effective with the shotgun. It will only reload one shell while you melee attack, actually giving the weapon a disadvantage when being swarmed at close range.

Also loved your McCain comment, it just fit right in.

I think that the assault rifle is one of my favorite weapons for it’s close range ability. You can wash down an entire field of zombies around you just by spray and pray, and then reloading while meleeing is OP so you can easily keep them all back while you reload.

I don’t like the shotgun in close quarters because it reloads extremely slowly and it only has 8 shots or whatever, depending on which shotgun. Those only last so long.

  5.

The hunting rifle is good at close range, just not while moving. It is meant for long range though.

  6.

I’d have said the slow reload time would be more of a disadvantage to the shotgun than the long rand inaccuracy, which makes dual pistols all the more important once you’ve depleted your 8 or 12 shells.

Also, your article doesn’t take into account any kind of team tactic. You’re telling people the base advantages and disadvantages which is fair enough but on the harder skill levels if everyone picks uzi or shotgun then you’re doomed. pairing up is usually the best strategy here, 2 uzi and 2 shotgun with two watching the front and two on the rear during swarms. Have your shotgun guy crouched infront of the uzi guy during tight areas like the train carriage as well so that you can have two firing with out risk of injuries.

While we’re on tactics, I reckon you’d do a good job to write up the rules and tactics to a boomer attack as well, the amount of people i’ve seen standing at the front line shooting after they’ve been vomited on.

  7.

I’d like to have some of what the developers were taking when they made the UZI have great range and accuracy and low spread.

  8.

    @sam,

This isn’t Counter-Strike. Just because these weapons aren’t the same as CS weapons don’t make them unbalanced or bad in any way.

There are only ten weapons, the developers needed top balance them out and give them all advantages and disadvantages. If this were CS, then everyone would just use the AK.

  9.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, If only I had known that as I was posting it D:.

I may make a team tactics guide at some point, but that requires in game screens, so I will need a team that is willing to try out tactics and their effectiveness.

  10.

Hunting Rifle has a low rate of fire? I dominated an oncoming hoarde while in a train all by myself with the power of the quick firing of the Hunting Rifle…

  11.

Also, Coded One, it’s not like CS’s weapons are perfectly balanced themselves. :D

  12.

pretty good article. aut you CAN quickfire hunt-rifs and its important to mention a full clip reload time.

  13.

I have to differ about the shotguns ammo being limited, as long as you control your shots and reload after each one, it works perfectly well. Just make sure you don’t start panic-shooting.

  14.

i think you should have added the shove attack which is good for bringing a smack attack against and horde of zombies that surrounded you.

  15.

I agree with almost all of this, except for the hunting rifle being ineffective at close range, and that it has low rate of fire. If you click fast enough, the hunting rifle is almost like a sub-machine gun, and it is extremely powerful. Also, you don’t have to worry about aiming because of it’s ridiculous inaccuracy when you’re not using the scope. However, it can run out of ammo rather fast if you’re not careful.

  16.

    Shotguns forever!

Also, the assault rifle’s rate of fire is just a wee bit slower than the Uzi’s. That’s a good thing, though, since the Uzi dumps an entire ammo cartridge in about a second, and the DPS on the assault rifle is better anyway.
